YOGA AND TREKKING IN THE DOLOMITES

22-27 JUNE 2020

In June this year Doris Palmer, yoga instructor from San Francisco and Simon Leadsom, SL Treks, will be hosting a 6 day lodge to lodge walking and yoga holiday in the beautiful Dolomites, Northern Italy.  It will culminate in a visit to Venice.

Each day will consist of an hour’s early morning yoga class followed by a 5-6 hour walk of around 10 miles.  The evenings will be spent in mountain refugios (lodges), each with wonderful views.  An additional yoga class will also be held in the late afternoon.  Dinners are a la carte and the accommodation a mixture between group dormitories and twin/three bedded rooms.

Doris Palmer began practicing yoga in 1993 and received her teaching certificate in 2004 at the Avalon Art & Yoga Center.  Later she studied with globally renowned restorative teacher, Judith Lasater at the Iyengar Institute in San Francisco and received her restorative teacher certification.  She draws upon many styles of yoga and focuses on the needs of each student, whether it is building strength and flexibility or becoming more self aware in their own practice.

Her practice, Doris Yoga, enables body awareness and control, actively engaging muscles we may not be accustomed to engaging, strengthening them so we can improve balance, build a stronger core, increase range of motion, and live pain-free.

Since working the summer at aged 18 in a hotel in Snowdonia, North Wales, Simon Leadsom developed a passion for the mountains.  He qualified as a mountain leader whilst in the Army and for the next 35 years, whilst serving and during his career in the City, he led mountain trips both in the UK and internationally.

After retiring from the City in 2011 Simon set up SL Treks and has managed corporate, public and private groups on trekking and via ferrata trips in Europe, Africa, North America and Asia.  These include ascents of Mt Elbrus, the Matterhorn, Mt Blanc, Kilimanjaro and Batian (Mt Kenya)

YOGA

Doris will run an hour’s yoga class before breakfast at 0800 hours each day.  Breakfast is at 0900 hours.  In the late afternoon/early evening Doris will run another yoga class, depending on how everyone feels (!) between 17.30 – 18.30 hours.  The evening meal will be at 19.30 hours.

THE WALKING

The walking will be centered around Cortina D’Ampezzo, set in the heart of the Italian Dolomites. We will be walking for about 5-6 hours each day, including a decent break for lunch and regular breaks along the way.  We aim to start walking by 10.00 hours each day and finish between 1600 – 1700 hours.   The difficulty of the walk is “moderate” (see Terms and Conditions, page 6, for definitions).

The lodges are well equipped and have hot showers.  Walkers will need to carry a small ruck sack with changes of clothing and overnight wear.  Suitcases can be left in hotel Columbia with fresh clothing for Cortina D’Ampezzo and Venice.  The lodges are dramatically situated.
